Steroids: the benefits are permenant the ban should be too

This study indicates that the benefits of steroid use can continue even after the doping has stopped. If athletes are banned for steroid use there is a strong argument that the ban should be permanent because they have a continuing benefit.....

A team of researchers has examined the impact of anabolic steroid use on power lifters years after the athletes had ceased to take the drugs. The researchers found that while physical traces of the drug no longer remained, changes in the shoulder and quadriceps still gave lifters an advantage years later.

Anabolic steroids provide a competitive edge in power lifting years after doping has ended

I have been thinking this for a while now - thanks for sharing some research that validates it. I had always been told by bodybuilders that when you do a course of steroids, you retain a proportion of the muscle after the course ends so it just seemed like a no-brainer to me that a ban should be permanent.

I think the same will be found to be true (if anyone cares to carry forth a study) of other “edge” drugs as well; EPO, hGh, etc. I have nothing to offer to back this notion up, of course, other than empirical knowledge. From what I have seen, though, once the body has been pushed to an extreme, whether naturally and/or “artificially aided”, it will retain a certain amount of “memory” of having been there. What part of that is an actual after-the-fact physical transformation edge, who knows? What part is mental? And, from the athletes’ point of view, who really cares if the ultimate, lingering result is a continued increase in performance?
