Carbs, Fruit, Veg and cancer...

Actually there is no evidence ( in this study at least ) that a higher fruit and vegetable intake reduces the incidence of cancer..... However another study does suggest that a high carbohydrate diet is a risk factor for breast cancer Such heresy....

Fruit juice? No thanks

Fruit juice could reduce the effectiveness of some medicines I've previously had posts that pointed out that fruit juice was far from being a health food . Mark Sisson explained some of the concerns the other day in an excellent post - Mark what's wrong with juicing? The take-home message is this: juice can offer a decent source of nutrients on days when it’s hard to work in your usual amount of fruits and veggies, but it’s just not an adequate substitute for the real/whole source. (Note: It also requires that you recalibrate your overall carb load that day.) Here is something else to consider : Research presented at a US conference suggested a chemical in grapefruit juice could stop anti-allergy drugs being absorbed properly. A University of Western Ontario team said oranges, and possibly apples, had similar ingredients. Grapefruit juice is already known to interfere with blood pressure drugs. There are more details in a press release from the University of Western Ontario ...

Fructose makes you fat?

Fructose Converts Quickly to Lipids Triggering Hyperlipidemia . ...Lipogenesis increased significantly when glucose was replaced with fructose on a gram-for-gram basis in energy drinks consumed by six healthy volunteers, researchers here found. Conversion of fructose to lipid occurred quickly, usually within four hours after ingestion, Elizabeth Parks, Ph.D., of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and colleagues reported in the June issue of the Journal of Nutrition. Moreover, consumption of a high-fructose drink for breakfast increased liver-mediated fat storage after lunch, the researchers said. "Our study shows for the first time the surprising speed with which humans make body fat from fructose," said Dr. Park. "Once you start the process of fat synthesis from fructose, it's hard to slow it down." Read this bit: "The message from this study is powerful because body fat synthesis was measured immediately after the sweet drinks were consu...

I don't like fruit juice

Back in January I pointed out that the Guardian had a thought-provoking piece on fruit, saying that the current focus on fruit in the diet is not necessarily healthy: The myths of fruit I was thinking of this reading Dr Briffa's latest post: Study links fruit juice consumption with increased risk of diabetes
