Talking of rotation....

...we were talking of rotation. I can certainly see the application of this in martial arts or self defence

If you look at the movement there isn't much rotation happening at the lumbar spine. The hips follow the shoulders. This is quite different from other questionable rotational exercises that cause rotation at the lumbar spine.

I agree with the first comment. He does a good job of stabilizing the lumbar spine and rotating through the hips. He obviously has pretty good hip mobility. Also, notice how he doesn't flex the spine as he rotates.

This would be a better option for rotation, especially if the trainee has good hip and thoracic spine mobility, and has been taught to stabilize the lumbar spine with abdominal bracing.
