Americans actually burn more calories than they did 50 years ago. The reason is not because we exercise more, it's simply because we have bigger bodies and therefore a higher energy requirement for weight maintenance.
We've reached a new equilibrium where body size, energy intake and energy expenditure are all increased.
As I said I think a lot of that is a bit overblown and exaggerated. I also have a problem with its promotion of antibacterials. I think we are far too casual about their impact on our microbiome.
