He points towards a study reported here which explains a possible mechanism behind the way in which calorie restriction (and possibly fasting) is able to improve longevity. Like most studies which are done out there, this one comes with lots of ifs and buts, however the indication is that going hungry episodically can turn on a beneficial cell cleansing process.
