The purpose of a side plank is to resist rotation (movement). Adding a side bend movement is counter productive. Check out Dr Stuart McGill's work on core funtion and strength for the particulars.
I think that with this exercise we have to training the Physical strength, so I think that it is one of the things that every one have to do every single day!!
